Penguin Random House

A digital platform to streamline internal communications for a giant publishing house.

The 2013 merger between Random House and Penguin created a truly global book publisher with nearly 250 independent publishing imprints. Naturally this brought with it logistical challenges as the two companies became a single unified company.

Scoping phase

Penguin Random House UK (PRH) approached us to provide a solution for a new intranet working with them from the initial scoping phase, through user experience and information architecture to visual design and production.

PRH wanted to build on WordPress due to a preference for open source technologies. Managing user permissions and personalisation across multiple UK sites was an important part of the process and integration with Active Directory provides staff with a seamless single sign-on across networked devices.

External systems

The site makes use of a number of external feeds including an ONIX feed to list new title releases and a phone directory which is integrated with their HR system.

The site is hosted on PRH infrastructure and we worked closely with their team to set-up the environment and load test prior to launch. We continue to work closely with the PRH team supporting the intranet and continuously refining and developing new features.
