Making things for the web

An example of Web Fonts from Monotype Imaging

Monotype Imaging have released their Beta of Web Fonts, providing web designers with fonts other than those commonly installed on end-user's computers. On lineindustries.com we use sIFR to style headings, introductory paragraphs and so on but it has it's limitations. sIFR uses a combination of Flash and Javascript to style the page once it loads, users who don't have the Flash plug-in lose out and that includes iPhones and iPads. Web Fonts allows use to style type using CSS.

According to Monotype Web Fonts officially support the following browsers:
  • All versions of Internet Explorer since v4
  • All versions of Webkit/Safari since v3.1
  • All versions of Firefox since v3.5
  • All versions of Chrome since v4.0
  • All versions of Opera since v10.10
Web Fonts is still in beta but we'll be watching how it develops.

Below is a very, very quick example of Web Fonts in use.

My last comment was a bit rash! It turns out the Mac I was using had an ancient Firefox install. I've updated the post with browser support info.
