At Line Industries, we design and build many websites for children's publishers and a popular freebie to offer younger visitors is a wallpaper download. As there are so many display resolutions, producing unique wallpapers for every resolution is not an option, but by analysing site visitor statistics, we can offer a range that covers most of the bases for a particular audience.
We took a look at the last three websites we built for children's publishers to see if we're still offering relevant content for the audience. In one case, there were 118 different display resolutions for Dec-Jan! The top five most popular resolutions for the three test cases in the same period show that most users were using a screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels or higher:
| Site 1 |
Site 2 |
Site 3 |
| 1280x800 |
1280x1024 |
1280x1024 |
| 1024x768 |
1366x768 |
1280x800 |
| 1366x768 |
2560x1440 |
1024x768 |

1024x768 |
1366x768 |
| 1440x900 |
320x480 |
1440x900 |
There is one exception, which is much smaller - 320x480. This happens to be the resolution of the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch. Jumping over to the stats for mobile devices, it turns out a fair few visits were made to the sites via these three devices. The table below shows the most popular mobile devices:
| Site 1 |
Site 2 |
Site 3 |

Looking at the above it's clear that for this audience, the iPhone, iPad and iPod have been popular choices for mobile browsing. In this case, adapting the range of wallpaper sizes is an easy way to tailor content to a specific audience and is something we're able to update over time to make sure visitors are always getting the most relevant content.
